Background

Brick building is having a moment. Adults are the fastest-growing segment of the construction-toy market, mosaic and portrait sets sell out, and a whole community has grown up around turning images into brick art by hand — counting studs on graph paper, eyeballing colors, and hoping the parts order comes out right.

Doing that by hand is genuinely hard. Getting from a photograph to something you can actually build means solving a chain of problems most people give up on halfway through: which colors are even available, how big the finished piece needs to be before a face reads as a face, and what exactly to order.

TAKGIO is building Brickture to collapse that whole chain into one tap. Point your phone at something — a person, a pet, a skyline, a logo — and get back a buildable design, a complete parts list, and instructions to build it, whether you're using LEGO® bricks or any other compatible brick system.

The Challenge

“Turn a photo into bricks” sounds like a filter. It isn't. A filter only has to look good on a screen; Brickture has to produce something that survives contact with the physical world — real parts, real colors, real money.

  • A fixed, unforgiving palette. A photo holds millions of colors. A brick system offers a few dozen, and not every color exists in every piece. Mapping one onto the other is a constrained quantization problem, and naive nearest-color matching produces muddy, unrecognizable results.
  • Resolution versus cost. More studs mean more detail — and a bigger, heavier, more expensive build. There's a threshold below which a portrait stops reading as a person, and it moves depending on the subject. The app has to find it rather than making the user guess.
  • Subjects, not pixels. A good brick mosaic isn't a downsampled photo. It preserves the thing that makes the image legible — the eyes, the silhouette, the contrast edge between subject and background — and spends its limited detail budget there.
  • Buildability. A design that can't be sourced or assembled is a picture, not a product. The output has to resolve into parts a person can actually buy, and instructions a person can actually follow.

Our Approach

Brickture treats the conversion as a design problem with a hard physical constraint, not an image filter with a brick-shaped overlay.

The pipeline starts by understanding the picture before touching a single pixel — finding the subject, separating it from the background, and identifying the regions a human eye will actually judge the result on. That analysis drives everything downstream: how to crop, where detail matters, and how aggressively the background can be simplified to buy resolution for the subject.

From there, the image is mapped onto the real palette — matching perceived color rather than raw RGB distance, so skin tones, skies, and gradients hold together instead of banding into mud. The result is fitted to a stud grid at a size the user chooses, and resolved into a concrete parts list.

It's the same discipline behind every TAKGIO product, pointed at a very different problem. Construction document intelligence is about extracting structure from something messy and unbounded. So is this — the messy input just happens to be a photograph, and the structure has to come out the other side as something you can hold.

How It Works

  • Snap or import. Take a photo in the app or pull one from your camera roll.
  • Pick your size. Choose how big the finished build should be — the app shows the trade-off between detail and part count before you commit.
  • Preview the build. See the brick-rendered result next to the original, and adjust the crop or framing until it reads right.
  • Get the parts list. Every piece, by color and quantity, so you know exactly what to order or pull from the bin.
  • Build it. Follow step-by-step instructions from the first row to the last.

What Makes It Different

Most photo-to-mosaic tools stop at the picture. They hand you a pixelated image and leave the hard part — what to buy, how to build it, why it doesn't look like the person — entirely to you. Brickture is built around the assumption that the output is a physical object, and that the design is only good if the thing on the table looks like the thing in the photo.

It's also a deliberate move for the studio: after Pinball Fantasy took our modeling work into fan engagement, Brickture takes it into consumer mobile and the creator side of entertainment — the same expansion, one step further.

Status

Brickture is in active development and has not launched yet. It's being built for iOS and Android, with both platforms targeted at launch. We'll announce availability on this site and through the TAKGIO newsletter.
